Lansing Oldsmoble Park
Welcome to Lansing a great place to Live, Work & Play...As Michigan's Capitol City. Lansing is not a typical factory town. Here manufacturing co-exists with the business of bureaucracy, fashioning a city that features both the impersonal tools of an Industrial Revolution and the grandiose splendor of Michigan's government. This unique blend creates exceptional personal and professional opportunities for Lansing's residents and helps the city remain prosperous at a time when similar Midwestern cities are struggling. In Lansing, nature counter balances industry. For blocks upon blocks, factories dominate Lansing's scenery, especially on main thoroughfares. Yet many Lansing neighborhoods feature tree-lined streets, beautiful homes & manicured yards.

A tree-lined Grand River weaves its way through the heart of the downtown Riverwalk, providing a place for runners and those just out for a lunchtime stroll. The Lansing Parks & Recreation Department maintains 2,500 acres of park land, including Lansing's six-mile River Trail which follows the banks of the Grand and Red Cedar Rivers. Lansing's downtown bustles on weekdays, sustaining many downtown businesses, including gift shops, coffee houses, and restaurants. With the recent addition of Oldsmobile Park and a few new restaurants and bars, Lansing's downtown is becoming a center for entertainment on nights and weekends. Michigan's state government, Michigan State University, and General Motors are Lansing's major employers.

Since it's unlikely that neither the state government nor MSU plans to leave, General Motors remains the key to Lansing's economic prosperity. In 1979, General Motors employed 23,000 workers in Lansing. Today, General Motors employs 13,000 at five factories and a parts warehouse. In 1998, Oldsmobile moved its world headquarters from Lansing to Detroit, ending a century-old relationship with the city. This trend startled many community leaders, including Mayor David Hollister, who organized a community effort to keep General Motors in Lansing. Recently, General Motors announced plans to build a new Cadillac factory in Lansing. By 2001, General Motors will employ more than 16,000 here.

Furthermore, industry observers expect General Motors to announce that three additional factories will be built in Lansing, thereby solidifying its working relationship with Lansing for the next millennium and ensuring a bright economic future for the city. People come to Lansing for the extraordinary job market and the quality of life. For many, Lansing offers many big city amenities without big city problems like heavy traffic and high crime. In 1847, Eliza Powell opened a one-room, wooden schoolhouse in north Lansing. Today, Lansing's school District covers 64 miles, including small portions of East Lansing, Delhi, Delta, Dewitt, Watertown, Windsor, and Lansing townships.

In the 1998-99 academic year, 18,093 students were enrolled in 34 elementary schools, four middle schools, three high schools, one vocational center, and one special education facility. Lansing employs professional, experienced teachers. In fact, a majority of Lansing's teachers possess master's degrees. Lansing's population is diverse. Many people are highly-skilled members of the blue-collar working class while others are college-educated, white-collar business people. Both groups consist of friendly, hard-working people who enjoy the many leisure activities of the greater Lansing area. Michigan's State Capitol is Lansing's most recognizable landmark. Resembling the U.S. Capitol, Michigan's State Capitol opened for legislative sessions in 1879.

After a 1992 restoration project, the federal government recognized Michigan's State Capitol as a National Historic Landmark, the nation's only state capitol building to earn this distinction. Oldsmobile Park is a minor-league baseball cathedral. From April to September, Olds Park is home to the Lansing Lugnuts, Midwest League (A) affiliate of the Chicago Cubs. The 11,000-seat brick, steel, and concrete stadium sits on a city block once populated by adult book stores, pawn shops, and condemned buildings. Olds Park represents the city's effort to revitalize downtown Lansing. Since the opening of Olds Park in 1996, more than 1.4 million fans have attended games there, spurring development of new businesses in downtown Lansing.

Lansing's Old Town is the city's cultural center, where art galleries, gift shops, and restaurants thrive in a historic setting along the banks of the Grand River at the site of Lansing's first permanent settlement. Old Town hosts a number of community events each year, including the August Jazz Fest and mid-October's Old Town Art & Octoberfest. Potter Park Zoo is Lansing's animal kingdom. There visitors can see camels, African lions, Siberian tigers, kangaroos, spider monkeys, and many other exotic animals. Downtown Lansing's Impression 5 Science Center encourages scientific curiosity. More than 150 hands-on exhibits help visitors to discover science. That's why Impression 5 ranks among America's top ten hands-on museums.

Boarshead Theatre, a professional company, brings a variety of entertaining shows to Lansing each year. For the community theatre experience, there's Riverwalk Theatre, located along the banks of the Grand River, and the Lansing Civic Players Guild, an organization that started performing in 1929. For music lovers, there's the Greater Lansing Symphony Orchestra and the Opera Company of Mid-Michigan. Both organizations are dedicated to excellence in performance and education programs designed to bring music to the masses. And the Lansing Art Gallery exhibits the work of many Michigan artists, including many from the greater Lansing area.

In the beginning, New York speculators bought land, mapped a city, and sold lots to those willing to build homes in the woods where the Grand River met the Red Cedar River. By 1845, only 88 people lived where Lansing stands today. Three significant events laid the foundation of this tiny community's extraordinary future. In 1847, after founding a settlement in north Lansing, the wealthy James Seymour convinced the legislature to relocate Michigan's government from Detroit to Lansing. Ten years later, the Michigan Agricultural College, the nation's first land-grant college, opened in East Lansing. Finally, in 1897, R.E. Olds founded the Olds Motor Vehicle Company. Lansing's convenient location to major highways aide in making Lansing a great place to work, and a great place to live.
