On Michigan State's campus, there's a refreshing, youthful enthusiasm that spreads through surrounding neighborhoods where many students live intermingled with permanent residents. This combination of endearing idealism and tempered experience gives this city its charm. Despite East Lansing's high taxes, many choose to live here because of East Lansing's excellent schools. East Lansing's School District has a tradition of academic excellence. Student test scores meet or exceed state and national averages. Students have earned State and National recognition for excellence in mathematics, science, writing, French, Latin, debate, band, orchestra, choral, and art. More than 85% of East Lansing High School graduates continue their education. The district covers 12 1/2 square miles, serving most of East Lansing and Portions of Lansing, Lansing Township, and Meridian Township.

In the 1999-00 academic year, more than 3,600 students were enrolled in seven elementary schools; one middle school; and one high school. People flock to East Lansing for Michigan State University athletic events, including football at Spartan Stadium, basketball at the Breslin Center, hockey at the Munn Ice Arena, women's volleyball at Jenison Fieldhouse, and baseball at Kobs Field. The Wharton Center's 2,500-seat Great Hall hosts many of Broadway's finest touring shows, as well as the Greater Lansing Symphony Orchestra, the Opera Company of Mid-Michigan, the MSU Department of Theatre, and the MSU School of Music. The Kresge Art Museum displays Michigan State's extraordinary art collection. The collection features art dated from the late Stone Age to present day.

In addition, Kresge periodically features student and faculty art. The W.J. Beal Botanical Garden is the nation's oldest continuously operated garden of its kind. The collection features more than 2,000 different plants and trees, including endangered and threatened species. Study the stars at Abrams Planetarium, where a sky theater, blacklight art gallery, and exhibit hall encourages the study of astronomy. Sample the fare of the MSU Dairy Store, where you can buy ice cream, cheeses, and yogurts that the MSU Dairy Plant produces each day. For one weekend each year, East Lansing blocks its downtown streets for the East Lansing Art Festival, an event featuring more than 225 of the nation's finest artists. The event features incredible works of arts, live music, and family activities.

East Lansing maintains 17 parks. There's the 46-acre Tomar/White Memorial Park that features a pond with hiking and cross country skiing trails. And there's the 36-acre Patriarche Park with baseball and softball fields, lighted tennis courts, a covered pavilion, a wooded picnic area, and a playground. In 1857, the Michigan Agricultural College opened with 63 students attending classes taught by five faculty members in three buildings. Shortly thereafter, professors built homes north of campus. People called this area Collegeville in 1907 when residents chartered the city of East Lansing. Today, with more than 42,000 students, 4,000 faculty members, and 400 buildings, Michigan State is one of America's largest universities.
