Welcome to Okemos a great place to Live, Work & Play...Okemos of Meridian Township. Home of Lake Lansing Strip Malls, grocery stores, and restaurants surround Meridian Mall and the main thoroughfare - Grand River Avenue. There are few trees in this area of Meridian Township, creating an airy, open commercial atmosphere. Meridian Mall is the Lansing area's largest retail center, therefore, heavy traffic is common for this particular area. Commercial land adjacent to the mall is considered prime commercial real estate and the site of future commercial growth. Many large retail chains have expressed an interest in developing this area. Many Meridian Township residents are concerned about traffic congestion and the rapid development of the area.

Residents realize development is important for a healthy, growing community, but residents want to ensure the area is growing responsibly. Heavy traffic is a symptom of this rapid development, and for many residents, controlling or stopping growth is the only solution. Lansing and East Lansing offer many attractions for people living in Meridian Township, but the township has plenty to offer its residents, too. Beautiful Lake Lansing surrounds Haslett. Lake Lansing is the area's largest body of water. People enjoy sailing, boating, fishing, and swimming at the lake. In the winter, people enjoy ice fishing and skating. Hikers and cross country skiers take advantage of the many scenic trails that surround the lake. Meridian Township's Parks & Recreation Department maintains 20 parks that cover more than 860 acres of land.
Okemos Old Town

Every Meridian Township resident is within walking distance to recreational activity. Those activities include a nature center, walking trails, access to the Red Cedar River, and athletic fields. In Okemos, the Nokomis Learning Center is a Native American cultural learning center that focuses on woodland Indians of the Great Lakes. The center displays arts, crafts, and artifacts of the Ojibway, Ottawa, and Potawatomi tribes. There's a gift shop featuring hand-crafted Native American art and jewelry. In 1840, the Sanford post office opened. It was name after Sanford Marsh who, in 1839, first settled the area. In 1841, Freeman Bray named the village Hamilton, after Alexander Hamilton. For a short time, the area was known as Sanford (post office) and Hamilton (village).

Later residents started calling the area Okemos, and Ojibwa word that means "little chief." Chief Okemos' tribe often camped in the area. In 1862, both the village and the post office became officially known as Okemos. In 1865, the legislature named the area surrounding Lake Lansing after James Haslett, who started a summer camp for Spiritualists near the lake. There's gold in Meridian Township. Well, that's a slight exaggeration, but, for Meridian Township merchants, operating a business in mid-Michigan's wealthiest community is like tapping into a gold mine of middle-class disposable income. Meridian Township is a suburban community. Families live in friendly, safe neighborhoods where trees shade the streets. Kids attend extraordinary schools, play in wonderful parks, and, as adults, return here to raise their children.

Meridian Township consist of the Okemos and Haslett communities. Although both maintain distinctive identities, including separate school systems, Meridian Township provides a municipal government, police and fire protection, and public services. Meridian Township residents are friendly and hard-working. Okemos is a white-collar, upper middle-class community where more that 75% of the residents work for Michigan State University or the State of Michigan. Haslett is a blue-collar, middle-class community where 41% of the people have earned a bachelor's degree or higher. While Haslett Public Schools is Haslett's largest employer, many residents commute to Lansing where they work for either General Motors or the State of Michigan.

Meridian Township's proximity to Lansing and East Lansing is one reason why many people choose to live here. More importantly, people want their children to attend the community's highly regarded public schools. At Okemos Public Schools, students' standardized test scores consistently rank well above the state and national averages. In 1998, 92% of Okemos High School graduates continued their education at colleges and universities. More than 4,000 students attend six elementary schools, two middle schools, and one high school. Okemos Public Schools maintain programs designed to enrich the community through youth sports and senior citizen activities. Haslett Public Schools spend $6,605 on each student and keep class sizes small. For Haslett, this has been a formula for success.

More than 85% of Haslett High School's graduates continue their education at either a four-year college or university or a two-year junior or community college. More than 2,700 students attend Haslett Public Schools at three elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school. Since General Motors, Michigan State University, and the State of Michigan are Meridian Township's Largest employers, the region is economically stable. That's why Meridian Township is a good place for local merchants and large retail companies to conduct business.
