The Downtown Development Authority (DDA) recently spent $3 million to improve the downtown business district. The authority replaced old sidewalks and added benches, streetlights and flowers. The DDA buried utilities underground, resurfaced Bridge Street, added a large clock to the opera House, and created more parking downtown. Future plans include revamping city owned parking lots and buying downtown property. The Grand Ledge Advocates for Downtown Development, an organization of downtown merchants, supports the DDA's efforts to revitalize downtown. Concerned residents renovated the Grand Ledge Opera House, a fixture in the community since 1884 and one of the city's oldest buildings.
Today, this magnificent, Victorian building, located on the banks of Grand River, hosts business meetings, weddings, receptions and community events. The building also houses the Grand Ledge Area Chamber of Commerce. More than 5,000 students attend Grand Ledge Public Schools, which includes six elementary schools, two middle schools, and a high school. Grand Ledge High School is accredited by both the North Central Accreditation Association and the University of Michigan Accreditation Bureau. Student test scores meet or slightly exceed state averages. Nearby Lansing and East Lansing offer many attractions, but there's plenty to see and do in Grand Ledge. The Country Mill has an orchard, cider mill, bakery and market.
Both the J&K Steamboat Company and the Princess Laura Riverboat offer old-fashioned scenic cruises on the Grand River. The Museum, a restored 1880 Gothic Revival house, displays rotating theme exhibits, highlighting the Grand River, the Seven Islands and the Ledges. The Museum is dedicated to educating people about Grand Ledge's historic past. Fitzgerald Park can accommodate more than 800 visitors. The 78-acre park features fishing, canoeing, sledding, cross-country skiing, and ice-skating. The park is also home to Spotlight Theatre, a summer stock and repertory ensemble theater whose season runs from May to September. Island Park provides a picturesque setting for many community events, including October's Island Festival.
