Welcome To Mason a historic community with a promising economic future. As the county seat since 1840, the historic city of Mason is home to the Ingham County government, as well as the Ingham County Fairgrounds and Exposition Center, which is an active place throughout the year. Mason holds a population of about 6,700 and nearly 2,800 households. Two housing communities are under development on the city's east side and two are planned on the west side. The people of Mason are proud of the city's history. Six individual sites in the city are on the National Registry of Historic Places. They include three houses; the county courthouse, which was built in 1904; the scenic Maple Grove Cemetary; and the downtown Mason Historic Business District, which is bordered by Ash, Barnes, Maple and Park streets.

Mason is considered a business center for people in the southern part of the county. Along with a new Meijer, Inc. store, is the two-block district of antique stores, centered at North and Mason Streets. With US-127 running through the western part of the city, residents have easy access to quick transportation for shopping, employment, and college and university education. I-96 is seven miles north of the city and I-94 is 20 miles to the south. The Mason-Jewett Airport, nearby in Vevay Township, offers charter service for passengers and freight, while also having the largest private aviation school in the state. While Mason is considered a satellite city to Lansing and East Lansing, where may residents commute for jobs, the city has a substantial job base.

Mason Co-op Preschool and Mason Public Schools provide a variety of programs for young families, such as pre-school and kindergarten care, before and after school childcare, and summer childcare. There are six parks within the city of Mason, including Ingham County's Rayner County Park, which is next to the fairgrounds in the city's southwest sector. All of the parks have eating and cooking facilities and several are equipped with tennis courts and ball diamonds. The Ingham County Fairgrounds hosts a variety of events throughout the year. The annual county fair begins during the last week of July at the fairgrounds. Mason's annual Spring Fling arts and crafts show is held the first weekend in May, while Down Home Days, Mason's annual festival, is held during the third week in September.

Although the first white settler didn't arrive until 1836, the Mason area was well traveled by Native Americans many years before that. Called the Dexter Trail, the ancient path between Mason and Dexter, Michigan, still exists just east of the city. Mason - named after Michigan's first governor, Stevens T. Mason - was incorporated as a village in 1865. It became a city 10 years later. Mason holds the distinction of being the only county seat where the state capital is in another city - in this case Lansing. All the other state capitals in the country are also county seats.
