Welcome To Holt, big city amenities without big city hassles. Holt is a suburban community south of Lansing. Actually, with the exception of a solitary, old-fashioned metal sign welcoming visitors to the community, there's no discernible line of demarcation between Lansing and Holt. Simply, Lansing blends into Holt. Although modest strip malls intermingle with family businesses in a quaint downtown, Holt remains a small town community. The elegant, brick architecture of the strip malls helps Holt maintain this image. At times, it's hard to remember that this community is only minutes from Michigan's Capital City. This is a working-class, middle-income community where the neighborhoods are clean and the homes are comfortable but not too extravagant. Holt residents value family, hard work, and loyalty to their community.

Residents ardently support the community, especially the local youth and high school athletic teams. People live here because Holt is a small-town conveniently located within minutes of a large city. Essentially, there's big city amenities without the big city hassle. It's something people here want to preserve. That's why, although residents realize change will come, the people here resist it nonetheless, preferring to keep this community free of crime, free of traffic, and free of big business. Often in recent years residents successfully opposed commercial development of projects. The few projects passing community muster are usually those located on main thoroughfares away from residential development.

The Regional Steel Distribution Center opened for business in 1998. The center employs more than 200 people. Taylor Steel, another steel warehousing and distribution facility, opened near the Regional Steel Distribution Center. Since Michigan State University, the State of Michigan, and General Motors are Holt's largest employers, most residents make a short commute to work. Delhi Township provides Holt with a municipal government, police fire protection, and public services. Delhi Township does not have a police department, but the Ingham County Sheriff's Department patrols the area and has an office in the community. Essentially, Holt's post office and school system gives the community its identity.

Holt Public Schools' fine academic reputation also attracts people to the area. More than 5,200 students attend Holt Public Schools at six elementary schools, two middle schools, one junior high school, and one high school. Delhi Township plans to build a Community Activities Center in Holt. Community leaders hope this will become a gathering place for community events. For Holt residents, Lansing and East Lansing offer many leisure activities. Holt's parks offer residents the opportunity for recreation close to home. Deadman's' Hill features a pond, picnic area, and a large hill where people toboggan during the winter. At Valhalla Park, people fish, swim, and picnic near a large pond. There's baseball fields, tennis courts, and picnic facilities at Kiwanis Park.

Holt's long-term future, despite resident opposition, includes commercial development. Holt residents will work to ensure this community, regardless of future growth, remains a charming, friendly small town.
