How Are Credit Scores Calculated?Payment history is the number one factor in credit scoring. Collection accounts can be the single most devasting factor to the credit score of a truly creditworthy borrower. Taking proper steps to have these accounts show up as paid in full instead of a balance owing can be the difference between a 680 and a 580 score.
The account balance for each outstanding bill is the second most important thing in credit scoring. There is a hierarchy of credit that takes priority. For example, a mortgage is the best type of debt to have yet the worst to be delinquent on, whereas a debt with a finance company hurts your credit score most, yet a late payment to the finance company appears to have less of an adverse impact on credit score. The unofficial hierarcy of credit seems to go something like this: Mortgage; Student loan; Installment loan/lease debt; Major credit cards; Department store credit cards; and Finance company debt.
Length of credit history accounts for 15% of your score. Do not open several new accounts too rapidly. New accounts will lower the average age of your accounts, thereby reducing your credit score. Keep in mind that a credit socre is based entirely upon an individuals credit history. Income, assets, race, sex, age, religion, and political affiliation are not factors. However, although your age does not directly affect your credit score, it may have some impact because of the correlation to the length of time your credit has been established.

People who have experienced credit problems in the past should open a few new accounts to raise their score.

3) Closing unused revolving accounts can be beneficial if it will get you down to the optimal number of five open revolving.
